Japanese Acers - Maples

Acers can range in size from a metre to several metres in height. Garden Acers - Japanese Maples - are usually small to medium sized shrubs, but several can get to many metres height and spread. The striking foliage colours and form are the outstanding feature, often with brilliant autumn colours. There is a huge range of Japanese maples available now, and most will have very good information on the label.

Generally, Acers and Maples are happiest in a well drained soil, rich in organic matter, but will actually grow - if not thrive in most soil condition. The foliage of Japanese Acers can be damaged if brushed against or if grown in a draughty position. Maples often suffer from a little die-back of stems in the winter. Simply cut out the affected parts as growth of the Maples start in the spring. Japanese Acers are great for growing in containers.

They are famous for their autumn colours of the foliage
