A valuable plant in the autumn garden, this bulbous perennial will give a gaudy splash of pink in even the darkest corner. However, they are at their best in a bright sunny position. Plant in the spring. The bulbs will soon spread to form a sizeable clump. The clumps can be divided after flowering.
I have yet to smell the scent that they are supposed to have. That may well be more my fault than theirs! They are fully hardy, and insist upon flowering at a most inhospitable time of year. Good on them for that.
They make a spectacular display if planted mid border. Everything else is wrapping up for winter, and out pops this mass of colour.
In colder areas, it is best to apply a thick mulch prior to the winter.
Nerine bowdenii is normally pink - but there is a white form also available - Nerine bowdenii f. alba.
Easiest way to obtain more free plants is by division in late autumn - after flowering - rather than the laborious method of sowing seed and waiting three - four years for flower!
