Stipa gigantea is a valuable 'shape or architectural' plant for the garden. It can grow to around 2m high, and - set against a dark background, with access to the light of the sun - can be quite spectacular in the autumn months in particular. The Golden Oat is tuft forming and semi evergreen, sending up long stems with purplish flower spikes that turn gold in autumn. It will thrive in dry conditions, and is a good plant amongst shrubs or the perennial area.
Evergreen clump forming plant - with arching, lax narrow leaves below the long stems of flowerheads which can reach 2metres in height - though normally a little shorter on younger plants.
Propagation is rarely a problem, for this plant readily seeds itself in surrounding areas without any help from us humans! For a more 'instant' effect, simply divide the clumps in the spring.
