Pilea cadierei - The Aluminium Plant |
The plant: Grown for their attractively marked foliage these
tropical plants can be trailing or bushy, annuals or evergreen
perennials. Ovate leaves of dark green with a distinct silver-white
stripe. Other varieties, such as Pilea involucrate ‘Moon Valley’ or
‘Norfolk’, have a coppery-bronze foliage with a deep red underside.
Pilea microphylla, (P. mucosa), has a fern-like appearance with its tiny
leaflets on a multitude of branching stems. In warmer climates these
plants make ideal ground cover, as houseplants they look attractive
trailing over shallow containers.
Its needs: Warm humid growing conditions in semi-shade, extra
humidity can be provided by placing pot in or near a saucer of wet
pebbles. Use a rich organic potting mix which allows good drainage.
Care: Soak the pot once a week throughout the growing season, but
reduce watering in winter. Maintain high humidity. Trim back excess
growth to maintain a compact plant.
Good for: An easy to grow, compact, foliage plant, attractive on
its own or when planted with others.
